Research shows that there are more than 100 million fluorescent and highway lamps used in the United Kingdom each year which produce in excess of 3,100 tonnes of waste material which, until recently, has ended up in landfill sites.

Even though each lamp only contains a small amount or mercury the sheer volume of waste means that large quantities of hazardous mercury could find their way into our land and water supplies.

The mercury from only one fluorescent tube can contaminate up to 30,000 litres of water beyond a safe standard for drinking.

It is no longer acceptable to use landfill sites for disposal and the modern and environmentally sound treatment is to recycle the lamps extracting the glass and metal components and distilling the elemental mercury from the powder in the lamps for reuse.

Recycling...

  • Reduces landfill waste

  • Reduces potential contamination of land and water

  • Improves health and safety

  • Delivers "Duty of Care" to the user

  • Makes economic use of all components

Longhill Environmental offer this recycling service and have a simple pricing structure based on a price for the storage unit and price for collection and recycling of the contents.

The various options are:

Black Corrugated Pipes

These come in 4ft, 6ft and 8ft lengths and all are 300mm diameter. They can be stored inside or outside and the 8ft long pipe will hold various sizes of lamps.

  • 2fts = 420
  • 4fts = 210
  • 6fts (slimline) = 100
  • 6ft 2ft = 200
  • 8ft (thicker 1.5 inch thick T12's) = 54
  • Assorted PL lamps, etc = several hundred

Grey Bin

1 pallet size, with lid. Ideal for storing non fluorescent lamps such as SOX, sons, metal halide, compacts or 9", 2ft and 3ft fluorescents, etc.

Stores approximately 1200 compacts and standard sized non-linear lamps.

  • Comes with lid, can be stored inside or outside
  • 0.8m x 1.0m x 1.2 m (footprint is 1 pallet size)

Grey Collapsible Container

Sizes 1.5 pallet. Ideal for mixed lamp waste. Will accept all non linear and fluorescents up to 6ft long. The lid opens from above and the front folds down making it easy to access. Stores on average: -

  • 2fts = 3600
  • 3fts = 2400
  • 2fts 4fts = 2400 mixed
  • 6fts = 1200
  • Non-linear approx 2000 (depending on sizes)

Green Metal Container

Stands on a 2-pallet footprint. Size is 1.2m by 1.2m by 2.4.m Lockable indoor/outdoor container, which stores on average: -

  • 2fts = 7950
  • 4fts = 3900
  • 6fts = 1800 ( space for other lamps)
  • 6ft 2ft = 3900
  • 5fts 3fts = 3900
  • 3fts 2fts = 5800
  • 3000-approx averages of mixed 2fts/3fts/4fts/5fts/6fts and 8fts.
  • 1000 approx 8fts T12's (1.5 inch thick largest fluorescents)

Please Note -the amounts these containers will hold for well-packed lamps with packaging removed. It is the customer's responsibility to pack lamps inside the container and not to allow anything other than lamps to be stored in them for removal. Additonal charges will apply if the lamps require unpacking (for cardboard outers) or other waste is included in the container.
